Song of the day: Gimme tha Power – Molotov

Molotov is one of my favorite bands. My favorite Spanish-speaking band for sure.

Oddly, the only times that I’ve been to a Molotov concert were in Germany, during their European tour. But I don’t complain, the concerts were vibrant and full of energy, like their songs. Damn! I was even able to jump with them on the stage and had some words before and after the show.

But anyways. Mexico has been involved in many political disturbances and its social movements are a clear way to observe these several demands from all over Mexico.

What I like from Molotov is that they are totally apolitical, so have more energy to talk crap about everyone in politics.

This is one of their most famous songs, and almost an hymn that has trascended through all Latin America. I truly believe, that many inhabitants from Tijuana to Tierra del Fuego feel very identified with the lyrics.

This is a powerful invitation of Molotov to take the streets and demonstrate against the dirt in Politics: Gimme tha Power.

Somos pobres.
Nos manejan mal.

Dame, dame, dame, dame todo el power
para que te demos en la madre.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme todo el poder,
so I can come around to joder.

Dame, dame, dame, dame todo el power
para que te demos en la madre.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme todo el poder,
so I can come around to joder.

¡Fuck you, puto baboso!

so I can come around to joder.

Dame, dame, dame, dame todo el power
para que te demos en la madre.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme todo el poder,
so I can come around to joder.

Dame, dame, dame, dame todo el power
para que te demos en la madre.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme todo el poder,
so I can come around to joder.

C’mon!

The police is extorting you (money)
but they earn money from your taxes,
and if they treat you as a delinquent (thief)
is not your fault, thank the mayor. One must pull the problem up by the roots
and change the Government of our country,
the people in Bureaucracy,
those people that like crumbs.

That’s why I always complain and complain,
Because this is where I live,
and I’m not an asshole anymore.
Don’t you see the jobs of the Government?
There are people getting rich.

People living in poverty.
Nobody does a thing, because nobody is interested in you.
People from above detest you.
There are more people wanting their heads.

If you give more power to the Power,
they will come to fuck you harder.
Because we were a worldwide power.
We are poor.
We are wrongly managed.

Give me, give me, give me, give me all the power,
so we beat you up.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all the power,
so I can come around to fuck.

Give me, give me, give me, give me all the power,
so we beat you up.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all the power,
so I can come around to fuck.

Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.

That’s right, faggot.
Fuck you, stupid faggot!
Because we were not born where there’s nothing to eat,
we don’t have to ask: how are we gonna do it?
If they shout that we are lazy,
We are not!
LONG LIVE MEXICO, MOTHERFUCKERS!

Let the Mexican power be felt,
let it be felt, all together like brothers,
because we are more, we pull it at the same time.
Why do we follow a bunch of assholes?
that are driving us where is better for them
and is our sweat what supports them,
keeps them eating warm bread,
that bread, the bread of our people.

Give me, give me, give me, give me all the power,
so we beat you up.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all the power,
so I can come around to fuck.

Give me, give me, give me, give me all the power,
so we beat you up.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all the power,
so I can come around to fuck.

Give me, give me, give me, give me all the power,
so we beat you up.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all the power,
so I can come around to fuck.

C’mon!

Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.

The people united will be never defeated!
Tito and Huidos will be never neighbors!

Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.
Give me of, give me of, give me of, give me of all the power.

  1. The first time I heard Gimme tha power was on the radio in Mexico. My jaw dropped to my knees. This was probably in the middle of the 90’s. I had never heard anything like it, in public, in Mexico. My first trip to Mexico was in 1980. I’ve been travelling back and forth Sweden/Mexico ever since then and I lived in Mexico for a couple of years in the 80’s. Most music that my mexican friends listened too back then was in English, unless it was a family party and tropicalonas, cumbia, banda, rancheras and sometimes chinelo music was played. The first popular music in Spanish I noticed on the radio must have been by Fresas con Crema and Maria Conchita Alonso. The lyrics in Gimme tha power include topics that I feel my friends and family in Mexico hesitantly discussed in the 80’s and beginning of the 90’s. Some would even turn their heads away if I would refer to politics or ideas on social changes. Molotov gave me lots of hope and inspiration, personally and in a global perspective. I constantly played Molotov in my car, for my kids, as a part of Mom’s education to them. My kids turned out fine. I think they got it. And Molotov is still one of my favorite bands. They opened the gates for me in order to find lots of new, interesting and creative mexican and latin music. Thank you for the translation of the text. Great translation. Now I now what “guachas” means. I never figured that out…
